THEME: THE POWER OF MUSEUMS
Museums play a critical role in society from decolonisation and restitution to cultural diversity, from disaster risk management to local development. Museums are points of cultural and political discourse and an arena for cultural identity and change. As society forges ahead in the global space there are many lessons for us to learn and many changes for us to make on every level as heritage is a formative force of society. Our collections are potent assets for national identity with a clear role in decolonizing our thinking and refounding of who we are as a nation.
The walls of museums are permeable to protests in the streets, debates in parliaments and trending topics in social media. Everything in this world, one way or another, finds its way in. This is because heritage determines what people do and how they act and Museums exhibit society’s ability to innovate, exchange best practices and advance knowledge; to advocate for social justice and the protection of our planet; to bridge cultures and nations, and, ultimately, to build a peaceful world.
